The Underverse ruled by Bizarros。 The time-eating Chronovore。 Jimmy Olsen, superhero? Nothing is impossible in ALL-STAR SUPERMAN。 Except for the fact that Superman。。。 is dying。

Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's masterpiece is now released as a part of DC's prestigious new imprint of standalone graphic novels, DC Black Label。

Time running against the Man of Steel。 After a diabolical plot by his arch-foe Lex Luthor puts him on the brink of death, Superman must tie up loose ends and make sure that he leaves the Earth better than he found it。

The unstoppable creative team of writer Grant Morrison and artist Frank Quitely join forces once more to take Superman back to basics。 In an emotionally and visually stunning graphic novel harkening back to a Golden Age of comics, ALL-STAR SUPERMAN creates a new, and at the same time familiar, take on the world's first superhero。 This now-classic graphic novel features Superman's renowned supporting cast, including Jimmy Olsen, Lois Lane, Bizarro, Perry White and of course, his greatest foe Lex Luthor。 This volume collects issues #1-12。

I think I went into this with maybe a little too much hype。 This story just didn't do it for me personally。 Though there were some great moments, I'm just not attached enough to Silver Age Superman to really love this book, and all the references to classic Silver Age plots just make this feel a slightly disjointed collection of "Superman gets involved in random stuff and also he's dying。"Also, I know it's supposed to be a gag, but Lois Lane just refusing to believe that Superman is Clark just r I think I went into this with maybe a little too much hype。 This story just didn't do it for me personally。 Though there were some great moments, I'm just not attached enough to Silver Age Superman to really love this book, and all the references to classic Silver Age plots just make this feel a slightly disjointed collection of "Superman gets involved in random stuff and also he's dying。"Also, I know it's supposed to be a gag, but Lois Lane just refusing to believe that Superman is Clark just really kind of hurts。 The Reign of the Supermen sold the Lois/Clark romance more than this, and that was primarily a pulpy just-for-fun-and-also-sales-from-the-gimmick story rather than a serious exploration of the Superman mythos。 。。。more

4 1/2 rounded up to 5 from me。 The art and coloring are masterful。 Frank Quitley has a distinctive style, one that deserves repeated viewings。 The story is great also。 Superman is dying, but there are a number of things he needs to complete first。 Along the way, there are lots of interesting characters and scenarios。 I got a little lost at times with all the jargon and sci-fi plot lines, but it was nice that each chapter basically started a new story or adventure。 Highly recommended。

This offers a sometimes played out premise but with twist at what if Superman dies … but because of cancer? This book highlights Superman’s intelligence unlike many other books he is in。 This comic book is an overall good book with an interesting premise and will keep you hooked for the most part。

Everything you love about Superman-- the nobility, the weird sci-fi goofiness, the Superman/Clark Kent balancing act, the meaningful relationships, and above all, the constant sense of wondrous hope-- all in one package。 Grant Morrison is a massive nerd and one of the most talented comics writers in the industry, and he manages to distill the legacy of Superman into these twelve issues in a way that's both fun and deeply moving。If you only read one Superman comic, ever-- this is the one。 Everything you love about Superman-- the nobility, the weird sci-fi goofiness, the Superman/Clark Kent balancing act, the meaningful relationships, and above all, the constant sense of wondrous hope-- all in one package。 Grant Morrison is a massive nerd and one of the most talented comics writers in the industry, and he manages to distill the legacy of Superman into these twelve issues in a way that's both fun and deeply moving。If you only read one Superman comic, ever-- this is the one。 。。。more

Read this back in 2015 for the first time, was passing it in the local forbidden planet (that might not exist anymore due to the coof) and thought "ooh, looks interesting, what's this about?" and I bought it。By the end I was in tears at the story structure, the characterisations and the plots for everyone in this masterpiece of classic comicbook storytelling and it is my best example for anything written on Superman because there's never been a piece written since that even comes close to the hi Read this back in 2015 for the first time, was passing it in the local forbidden planet (that might not exist anymore due to the coof) and thought "ooh, looks interesting, what's this about?" and I bought it。By the end I was in tears at the story structure, the characterisations and the plots for everyone in this masterpiece of classic comicbook storytelling and it is my best example for anything written on Superman because there's never been a piece written since that even comes close to the highest ideals this book shows。(view spoiler)[ It tells the story of the last days of Clark Kent, of while saving the first manned mission to the Sun (yeah, cool huh!) he is given a FATAL dose of Solar radiation and his body is literally going to kill itself through the amount of energy he absorbed and rather than doing the existential thing that so many think is a cool trope, what does Grant Morrison do? "I'm going to make the world a better place while I have time。" and so begins Superman's labours。 (hide spoiler)]It's rare to see in comic fiction these days a protagonist who is doing things solely for the help of others and does it 100% of the time and does it knowing that they're doing it to make the world better when they're dead。 Most of the stuff coming out of comics these days is all preachy social justice about "fixing" the world and using characters as soap boxes for the writer to speak through。 Morrison writes a story that tells the best example of who and what Superman is meant to be。 "The Man of Tomorrow" the idea of what Humanity can be when it truly applies itself without thought to others。And in true style, there's nothing that is going to stop Clark from doing the right thing, even when that right thing will have him miss the few moments he has for himself with the woman he loves(view spoiler)[ (hide spoiler)]That is one of the single best things I've seen in ANY fiction and it trumps any argument that comics are for kids, it shows that when a writer with talent is given the chance, they can create masterpieces。This is still one of my favourite books of all time and I love every single pen stroke that went into making it。On an artistic standard I initially didn't like the "smooth buff" version of Supes that this book shows, but quickly that bled away as I saw the idea was more to pay homage to the Greek Myths of it, that pic of Clark sitting there just happy and relaxed is glorious in every sense of the word as you can tell I REALLY like this book and it's a massive recommend from me on this。 I only talked about it because the new ereader I've got I downloaded kindle for it and I have a copy of the book on that too lol。["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]> 。。。more

4 Stars。 To me, there has always been a gentle melancholy to Superman。 He is the last son of a dead world, filled with yearning for his lost home and family and the desire to live up to their imagined standard。 So Superman contracting (what is in effect) a terminal disease due to Lex Luther's machinations is a terrific set up for a Superman story。 In the time that he has left, he opens up to Lois, confronts Luther and faces a number of otherworldly challenges。 The set up had me expecting a bit m 4 Stars。 To me, there has always been a gentle melancholy to Superman。 He is the last son of a dead world, filled with yearning for his lost home and family and the desire to live up to their imagined standard。 So Superman contracting (what is in effect) a terminal disease due to Lex Luther's machinations is a terrific set up for a Superman story。 In the time that he has left, he opens up to Lois, confronts Luther and faces a number of otherworldly challenges。 The set up had me expecting a bit more of a unified narrative than it ended up being, but I didn't mind, as most of the stories ended up being wonderful。 One issue that I had was that occasionally Morrison's storytelling gets a bit convoluted in its time-traveling, universe-hopping, look-at-all-the-silver-age-mythology-i-know Morrisonness, but for the most part he restrains his more self-indulgent tendencies (at least in comparison to his run on Batman)。 For example, I didnt think that the chapter on the death of Pa Kent, in which Superman faces his own grief and the limits of his powers, needed 3 alternate dimension Supermen, but it still ended up being a fun and moving Superman story。The highlight for me was the artwork, which may be my favorite superman art that I've ever seen。 Richly colored and detailed without losing the golden-age cartoonishness that has always felt like part of the character's essence, the artwork lifts Morrison's enjoyable writing to the next level。 。。。more

After reading the worst comic I’ve ever read in the shape of Wonder Woman: Earth One and shattering my image of Superman with Red Son, I needed something to get me back on track。 This was the perfect choice。 It is an incredible comic with a carefully made artwork。 It feels wholesome, even though death is incoming and made me fall in love with Supes all over again。 There are letdowns of course。 There was this petty competition between men™️ to prove they were the most worthy of Lois。 What was it After reading the worst comic I’ve ever read in the shape of Wonder Woman: Earth One and shattering my image of Superman with Red Son, I needed something to get me back on track。 This was the perfect choice。 It is an incredible comic with a carefully made artwork。 It feels wholesome, even though death is incoming and made me fall in love with Supes all over again。 There are letdowns of course。 There was this petty competition between men™️ to prove they were the most worthy of Lois。 What was it about? I only read this because my husband wanted to re-read it but it's a really enjoyable volume and I genuinely like Superman。 Just because he isn't some tragic figure (here's where I state I don't understand the rabid love some fans have for Batman) doesn't mean his adventures aren't interesting or filled with action。 The Silver Age feel to this book works well for Superman and while not all of the comics are light-hearted adventures (the overall plot here definitely isn't)the lighter, sci-fi feel I only read this because my husband wanted to re-read it but it's a really enjoyable volume and I genuinely like Superman。 Just because he isn't some tragic figure (here's where I state I don't understand the rabid love some fans have for Batman) doesn't mean his adventures aren't interesting or filled with action。 The Silver Age feel to this book works well for Superman and while not all of the comics are light-hearted adventures (the overall plot here definitely isn't)the lighter, sci-fi feel really show off what's best about Superman。 While the art style isn't my absolute favorite, it also feels very Silver Age and Quietly does a really great job at drawing Clark Kent and Superman wholly differently, I was super impressed。Lex Luthor in general is probably my favorite villain and he was extra great here。 I loved his niece, his crazy prison antics, his disdain for Superman, his condescension towards everyone and particularly Clark Kent, his short short orange shorts, all of it is great。 I have no knowledge of Superman's history outside the basics (as per usual with all comics), so many of the new-to-me characters were also really entertaining, like Dr。 Quintum。 Ma and Pa Kent make an appearance as well and you can't help but love them。Superman is a good boy and a great superhero and reading about him was nice and that's all I want from my comics。 Maybe I just like my superheroes to actually be people to look up to instead of grimdark protagonists forced into heroics。 Lois is a bit weak and I don't really 'get' her relationship with Superman vs。 Clark Kent, but I suppose that's staying mostly true to the original comics and it wasn't that big a deal。 Otherwise very solid book and Superman is definitely not boring。 。。。more
